Before his set, I asked him how he felt about introduced as “Bob’s son”, and was he OK about performing his father’s music. He very graciously acknowledged that this was part of his mission, and by being born with the Marley name he knows that where ever he goes performing his father’s music would be expected of him – and boy did he deliver! Turn Your Lights Down Low and Chase those Crazy Ball Heads had Hyde Park sounding like a 15,000 strong choir, he churned out hit after hit, and upon walking off left us hungry for more. Robbie Gee and I witnessed the crowd literally begging for his return. He walked back on to the intro of No Woman No Cry. There were cheers, there were screams, and even a few tears as he voice echoed his father’s. If you had closed your eyes you would have believed it was Bob himself especially with the live atmosphere.
To top it, the weather was in our favour all day. Even though clouds formed over our heads and at some points became darker and darker, the rain just decided it didn’t want to start pouring until 7.10pm by which time the Showcase was over!!
I doubt that the Showcase will ever replace Notting Hill Carnival, however, if you want a carnival atmosphere, if you want to sit down with a picnic, if you want your kids to run around and just have a laugh, take a trip down to the Park next year.
