Recent interviews and reviews

Gok WanGok Wan: Through Thick And Thin

How can you not LOVE Gok Wan?? I interviewed him for a SpecSavers event, but thought I would be cheeky and use the time to get a quick quote on his book.  His face changed, and the energy in the room changed too. Gok had never faced some of his demons and in writing the book went through a healing process. There were events not even his parents knew about, and due to respect he let his mother read the manuscripts first, telling her if she were not happy with the world knowing the story he wouldn't publish. That just made me love him more!!

Shania Twain: From This Moment On

This is no run of the mill predictable sob story to gain sympathy. Shania Twain went through the valley before, during and after fame. Betrayal from a very close friend, marital infidelity, horrific childhood memories of violence followed by the death of her parents. She then used her talent to create an income to secure her siblings, but the local singing girl became a global superstar and she just wasn't ready for the returns!!!

Marian Keyes: The Brightest Star In The Sky

One of the first authors I interviewed at Magic.  She laughed at herself and was open about her life, warts and all.  That made me laugh, but she didn't take offence, because she laughs at herself!!!

Patricia Cornwell: Port Mortuary

The second most popular writer after JK Rowling. Patricia Cornwell brings Kay Scarpetta to life in Port Mortuary and I feel as if I know Kay.  We had 15 minutes allocated time to talk, but after half an hour I looked at the clock.  I HAD to stop, it was 4.55pm and I was live on air at 5pm.  She was a real inspiration.

Serena Williams: Queen Of The Court

Now this lady had me shaking, her handshake alone was enough!! Queen of the Court details Serena's life, her inspiration to play tennis which she got from her mum, but her life skills and tough but positive attitude she attributes to her Dad.

Fern Britton: New Beginnings

Fern's debut novel, New Beginnings, I felt tapped into every woman's life - loss, career move, and ultimately learning life lessons.  Fern and I chatted for a while not just about the book, but her husband Phil, her career, and leaving This Morning!!  We clicked, it was as if we had known each other for years.

Colleen Nolan: Denial

Loose Woman, singing sister, fitness expert and writer. Colleen's second novel - Denial - is quite juicy.  When you first start reading you will believe it's about Loose Women BUT the ladies featured in Denial are actually up against the Loose Women in their own TV show!!!  There's lots of glamour, twists and fun too. Colleen is down to earth and lovely to talk to.

Alan Sugar: What You See Is What You Get

I was never a real Apprentice fan, but woke up to his ability to perform on TV, (after all it is a television show), and then select the correct business person to join his empire. From humble beginnings to empire building, with Alan Sugar What You See IS What You Get!!

Nelson Mandela: Conversations With Myself

We all know the name Nelson Mandela for his strength to endure his 27 years in prison on Robben Island simply for standing up for his rights, but in my opinion the strength really kicked in when he was released!! The foreword is by 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama.  This is history on paper.

ABC in schools

I recently went back to my old High School, Claremont High, in Kenton, Middlesex to speak to a number of girls in Years 7, 8, and 9.  It was a memorable afternoon, I can remember speaking to the Welfare Officer/Pastoral Teacher, Margaret Constant, about the work that I loved doing with young children via reading.  Margaret assists the young girls at the school and, amongst her many duties, gives them a shoulder to cry on should they need it.

Maggs (as she likes to be known), would call me from time to time, and on one occasion I had mentioned that I had just returned from my younger daughter's school where I read with the children three mornings a week. Maggs decided to ask the same girls that I had spoken to back in October who their favourite authors were. She received a list longer than she had expected, which was proof that the students wanted more and were willing to put the work in.  ABC in Schools was launched!!

A number of girls from Claremont High read in groups during their lunch hour - it gives them some focus whilst increasing their reading and communicative skills.  I shall be visiting the girls soon and recording reviews of the books they have chosen, so do watch this space.
